Standard DNA samples are usually taken from the mouth using an ordinary sterile mouth swab. However, forensic samples, or what are sometimes referred to as non-standard samples, are usually taken in cases where it is not possible to take a mouth swab, for example in cases where a person is dead or unavailable for the test. Commonly used forensic samples include hair and blood. Forensic samples differ in the way they are collected and extracting DNA from some samples may be more laborious than with others. Moreover, depending on the case, certain laws may apply; it is thus important to be professionally advised on the matter.

DNA testing companies usually add an extra cost for submitting forensic samples and there are varying degrees of reliability with different samples. The success rate with some samples such as an envelope can be as low as 25%, however, a used Kleenex can have a success rate as high as 95%.
