Genetic testing on Animals

Genetic testing is often carried out on animals by pet lovers and breeders as a means of determining parentage or establishing whether an animal is predisposed to any genetic conditions. This type of testing is mainly for cats, dogs, birds and horses. Canine DNA tests can determine the paternity or genetic illnesses a dog might develop. Other animal DNA tests such as cat DNA testing can help breeders with informed selective mating.

In the case birds, DNA testing or bird sexing is particularly useful to establish the sex of the bird which is not always obvious by observation. Most animal DNA testing companies will provide a testing kit containing swabs with which to collect DNA samples. For breeders, such tests give the opportunity of providing genetically guaranteed pedigrees.
