Dog Genetic Age Test - What is the Genetic Age of your Dog? | EasyDNA UK

What is the Dog Genetic Age test? How does it work?

The Canine Genetic Age test is the first test of its kind on the market. The test determines the biological age and breed of the tested dog making it an ideal tool for taking control of a dog’s health and wellbeing. It is important to note that biological age is different than chronological or actual age since it provides insight into the predicted longevity and health of the tested canine. The Canine Age test measures the length of a dog’s telomeres, the protective caps at the end of each chromosome that tend to shorten with age. The telomere length is processed through the Canine Genetic Age database so that it can be matched with thousands of similar dogs to determine the dog’s true genetic age. As for breed identification, the test analyses the dog’s genetic makeup to discover the breeds found in their unique canine heritage. Take a look at the list of breeds tested HERE.

What can be discovered through the Biological Age and Breed?

The telomere length and cellular age of the dog can help the dog owner to:

  • determine the age when the dog’s actual age is unknown, a common issue with shelter dogs
  • take control of the ageing process by carrying out lifestyle or dietary changes
  • recognise any signs of potential health risks such as heart disease, diabetes or cancer

The breed composition of the dog can help the dog owner to:

  • determine what breeds the dog is made up of, a complete breakdown of the composition is provided
  • determine personality traits, exercise routines and behaviours expected from each unique breed
  • recognise illnesses and health problems which can plague the dog’s particular breed mix

Important note: The Canine Genetic Age test is not diagnostic and does not offer medical advice. The test is for informational purposes only and currently Patent Pending.

What about Sample Collection and Test Results?

The DNA sample for this test is collected through mouth swabs which are provided in the sample collection kit. The dog owner is required to painlessly collect cells by gently rubbing the swab inside the dog’s mouth, against the inner cheek. The rubbing procedure should not take more than a minute and is completely painless. Once samples are in the laboratory, scientists will proceed to analyse the DNA found in the canine cheek cells.

Results for the Genetic Age test are available within 2 to 3 weeks from receipt of samples at the laboratory and sent via email. Why don’t you check out a sample report of this DNA test?

Important note: The dog owner is requested to provide the weight of their canine. If the tested dog is a puppy (less than 2.5 years old), scientists will not use their weight but place it in the anticipated group based on their breed and likely weight. Providing the dog’s weight can help scientists deliver more accurate results! Please make sure to select the respective option when ordering the test.

Are you only interested in the Genetic Age?

We also offer the option to perform the testing for genetic age only excluding breed identification for just £58. When testing only for the age, the dog owner is requested to provide the suspected or known breed(s) of their canine. It is always better if the owner provides the exact breed(s) but if they are not sure and suspect that they have a particular breed, scientists still can use that information (based on weight) to provide a more accurate result. Please make sure to select the respective option when ordering the test.
