DNA Paternity Test – Truths and Myths

A recent report in Britain has uncovered the disturbing truth that up to 3 million people may have been misinformed as to who their real father is. Using a DNA Paternity Test will help discover the truth.

A recent BBC report on Five Live has uncovered the shocking news that as many as 5% of Britons may be wrong about who their biological father is. Speaking to Professor John Burn of the Institute of Human Genetics in Newcastle, it was revealed that the number could be up to 3 million. Now the debate is on as to whether easy access to DNA paternity tests has created more problems than solutions. What are the truths and myths surrounding this controversial topic?

A DNA paternity test can be used to shed light on many personal situations. The most common is a woman’s confusion over who the father of their child is due to an affair outside their relationship or marriage. Many women in this situation decide to keep their fears or doubt a secret for fear of the consequences of the truth, however due to the increased accessibility of these tests this is now proving harder to do.

Exposing Secrets and Lies

Obviously, such revelations will have the largest affect on the child. Throughout history, there have always been stories about the doubts over a child’s paternity, and more often than not, these doubts would remain unfounded and secretive. Whilst many may feel that it is in the child’s interest to protect them from such revelations, all children have the right to know who their biological father is, and paternity tests have made family secrets a thing of the past.

The Pros and Cons

As with all groundbreaking tests, there will be different reactions to the results. The affect of finding out the truth about your biological background may be upsetting but we have taken a few positive responses to DNA paternity tests from the BBC website:

"I don't judge my mother as I don't believe she has done any more wrong than any of us do in our complicated lives. She worried about telling me for 18 years. I wouldn't exist without this rather complicated story, so how can I regret it?"
